Large Scale Direct Shear Box Tests on Gravels

چکیده

The determination of shear strength characteristics gravelly soils is difficult through the use conventional small scale, triaxial or simple testing devices in laboratory due to membrane compliance and boundary effects; inconsistent penetration resistances measured as part standard cone field. These limitations require available empirical semi-empirical relationships execution large scale field tests. In literature there exists inconsistent, range recommendations for parameters. Within confines this study, direct box test results performed on poorly- (GP) well-graded (GW) gravel samples with initial void ratio ranging from 0.42 0.53 are presented, which tested under effective normal stresses 77 205 kPa. estimated peak secant-angles shearing vary 49 54 degrees. On basis volumetric change vs. strain responses, angle dilation elastic Poisson’s 10-16 degrees 0.28-0.39, respectively. values compared literature.

Effects of Ballast Degradation on Shear Strength Behavior from Large-scale Triaxial Tests

Ballast, typically comprising large sized aggregate particles with uniform gradation, is an essential layer in the railroad track substructure. Functions of ballast include facilitating load distribution and drainage, maintaining track geometry and track stability, and providing track resilience and noise absorption. Throughout its service life, ballast goes through changes in gradation and par...

Three-Dimensional Discrete Element Simulations of Direct Shear Tests

Using discrete element methods, geotechnical engineers can create “virtual laboratories” to simulate conventional laboratory tests. In this study, three-dimensional DEM simulations of direct shear tests are coupled with equivalent physical tests on steel balls. The macro-scale response of simulations is compared with the physical test results to validate the discrete element model and to gain i...

Permeability and Direct Shear Tests Characteristics of Railway Subballast

Permeability, filtration and shearing strength were widely considered to be the key properties in evaluating the performance of railway subballast. An investigation on these key properties of railway subballast was presented in this paper. A constant head permeability test and a middle scale direct shear test of railway subballast were conducted in the research, aiming to investigate the subbal...

TECHBRIEF Friction Angles of Open- Graded Aggregates From Large-Scale Direct Shear Testing

Introduction State and local transportation agencies frequently use opengraded aggregates for wall, roadway, and bridge construction. The primary advantages of using this type of material in wall and abutment applications are ease of constructability, lighter in-place density than well-graded materials, very low fine content, free-draining characteristics, and simpler quality assurance testing,...

A Study of the Rockfill Material Behavior in Large-Scale Tests

Inspecting the behavior of the rockfill materials is of significant importance in analysis of rockfill dams. Since the dimensions of grains in such materials are greater than the conventional sizes suitable for soil mechanics tests, it is necessary to experimentally study them in specific large-scale apparatuses. In this research, the behavior of rockfill materials in two large rockfill dams co...
